MSc student at University of Dar-es-Salaam.

Aim of research

The title of my research project: is on "Assessment of Gene flow between Manihot esculenta and Manihot glaziovii". This study aims at producing information that can be used to judge what effects the cultivation of GM virus resistance cassava in East Africa and Tanzania could cause due to gene flow, and what can be done to minimize any unwanted effects.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the research are

1. To review and update existing information on the geographic distribution of tree cassava/Ceara rubber (M. glaziovii) species in Tanzania.

2. To survey and characterize M. glaziovii and its hybrids in the coastal areas of Tanzania using morphological and molecular markers.

3. To establish controlled hybridization between M. glaziovii and M. esculenta species to establish potential production of viable F1 offspring.
